Bear on the track
By: Timothy Doll
OK, it's twenty years ago. I'm a raw rookie,
trying to figure out my first kart, and racing
on a seriously limited budget. There used
be this wonderful track in B.C. Canada called
Westwood. "Mountain High Racing" - 1.8 miles
carved out of a mountainside forest, huge
elevation changes, several challenging corners
- the only other track I've been to that even came
close was Sears Point. The other thing about
Westwood was that it was WAY out in the
boonies (ironically, where the track used to be
is now a housing development). No electricity,
no running water, but a great view. The back
straight was called "Deer's Leap" because
a few years earlier a deer had leaped over
a Formula Atlantic car at speed, knocking off a
mirror on a hoof. Well, I'm out during open
practice when I notice that the front number
panel is loose and about to fly off. I don't want
to loose it (no spare, and those things cost
money!) so I pulled off to the inside of a corner
and stopped. I ripped the number panel off, then
was wondering what to do with it (no glove
box ) when I noticed there was a rather large
bear about 10 or 15 feet in front of me, and
he didn't seem to be very happy that I was
there! Screw the number panel, I'm outa here!
I pulled into the pits and started yelling that
there was a bear on the track. Everyone
laughed (I apparently had a bit of reputation
in those days). No, REALLY! There is a
BEAR on the track! About that time, Bob
pulled in with his twin engine kart, removed
his helmet - his eyes are like saucers!
He's stammering and can barely get the
words out, but manages "I.......Almost......
Just........ Hit........A........BEAR! Suddenly
everyone turns into believers, so they
shutdown practice and go chase off the bear.
I miss Westwood :-(.
