Racing fluBy: V. Hill
During the late seventies and the early eighties there was a street race in
Collidge, AZ just south of Phoenix. This race had become more of an event
then a race. There was a very "Festive" atmosphere about the whole race. For
many karters this was the only race all year for them. The goal was always to
arrive on Friday and try to get a good spot. I achieved the ultimate pit spot
right next to the grid. Lots of room and ready to race. The only problem was
that I got very ill the night prior to the race. A flu of some type. This
would not be to bad except the only restroom facilities were portable types
and they were yet to be opened. This left only the gas station and the local
7 11. Not as great selection and they were about a half a mile away. Guess
where I slept? That's right, between the gas station and the 7 11. Dawn was
especially late for me. By race time I had consumed the contents of a very
large bottle of Pepto and some Amodium AD. Did I mention that it was colder
than a brick s--- house in January? On a more positive note, I think that I
lost about 10 lbs. of body weight over night and I was forced to actually add
weight to the kart. O-Boy!
The race was a great deal of fun more so that the previous night. The point
of the story was a less dedicated enthusiast, such as a golfer or tennis
player would have gone home and been sick in a more controlled, civilized
environment. Not karters, we are a more hardy, foolish lot. By the way home
was about 45 miles away. If I had left I would have lost the primo pit spot.
